Kenny G may not have invented smooth jazz, but he perfected it. Born Kenneth Gorelick in Seattle in 1956, he first saw the saxophone on an episode of The Ed Sullivan Show, and began playing a Buffet Crampton alto soon after. By age 17, he was playing in Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra, and continued to play professionally while studying for his accounting degree at the University of Washington. Signed to Arista in 1982 and rebranded as Kenny G, he found fame with his self-titled record, then took his fame into the stratosphere with his fourth release, Duotones. Featuring the single "Songbird," which hit the #4 spot on the charts and would eventually become his theme, Duotones sold more than 5 million copies, cemented his melodic and pop-influenced take on jazz, and set a template he still adheres to today.
