Metallica was created in 1981 by Lars Ulrich, the band’s drummer. A friend of his actually suggested the name for his own band, but Ulrich quickly talked him into using another name. After a few changes in band membership, the group eventually moved to San Francisco. Interestingly enough, live performance bootlegs were what helped Metallica gain popularity at this time. In 1998, they produced the album …And Justice For All. In 1990, their self titled album was released, and it proved to be a crossover hit. And in 1999, the album S&M, a collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony, was released. St. Anger followed in 2003, and Death Magnetic came out in 2008. Hetfield, in particular, is known for being very demanding with his bandmates. On the other hand, this is why Metallica has been so successful. Come see the results for yourself!
