Other Desert Cities is the sharp, family-driven drama from playwright Jon Robin Baitz that earned five Tony Award nominations during its 2011-2012 Broadway run, including Best Play. Set in Palm Springs on Christmas Eve, the play follows a former Republican ambassador and his wife as their daughter returns home with a tell-all memoir that threatens to crack open a long-buried family secret. There are no Other Desert Cities productions currently on sale, but when new dates are announced, BigStub will have tickets ready.
The play premiered at Lincoln Center Theater in early 2011 before transferring to the Booth Theatre on Broadway later that year. It has since become a staple of regional theater seasons across the country, drawing audiences with its mix of biting humor, political tension, and emotionally raw family drama. Jon Robin Baitz had been a respected playwright and television writer long before Other Desert Cities, with credits including The Substance of Fire and the creation of the ABC series Brothers and Sisters. The original Broadway production starred Stockard Channing, Stacy Keach, Rachel Griffiths, Judith Light and Thomas Sadoski under the direction of Joe Mantello, with Judith Light taking home the Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Play. The script was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, cementing its place as one of the most acclaimed American plays of its decade.
