Formed in San Jose in 1970, The Doobie Brothers began life as an R&B-influenced rock band beloved of the Hells Angels — a far cry from the laidback blue-eyed soul collective they'd morph into in a few short years. While they never lost the energy or verve of their hellraising early days, the addition of former Steely Dan guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter in 1974 and honey-voiced singer Michael McDonald two years later took the band in a smoother direction — one that resulted in many of their most beloved hits.
