Born in West London in 1951, Phil Collins first found fame as a child actor, landing the role of the Artful Dodger in the West End production of Oliver! But as he grew up, he drifted away from acting and into music, becoming the drummer for the iconic art rock band Genesis in 1970.  When frontman Peter Gabriel departed the group in 1975 following the release of the classic album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Collins took over lead vocals for the group, a position he would hold off and on for the next several decades.

But it was as a solo performer that Collins truly found his stride. From 1982 to 1989, while Genesis was on hiatus, he scored three UK and seven US top-ten singles, and when all his projects are collectively tallied, he scored more top-40 hits in the '80s than any other artist.  Songs like "Sussudio," "In the Air Tonight," "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)," and "One More Night" are stone-cold classics, and continue to make him one of the most in-demand performers around.
