Born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Sarah McLachlan displayed an interest in music from a young age, teaching herself to play the ukulele at age four and eventually studying classical piano, guitar, and singing at the Maritime Conservatory of Music. But it was 1993's Fumbling Towards Ecstacy that finally broke her as one of the era's defining singer-songwriters, and eventually led her to create Lilith Fair, a traveling music festival made up entirely of female solo artists and women-fronted bands.
