About Farm Aid

Farm Aid was born out of a specific crisis — the 1980s farm debt emergency that threatened to wipe out hundreds of thousands of family farms across the American heartland. Willie Nelson was moved to act after hearing John Mellencamp's "Rain on the Scarecrow," and together the two, along with Neil Young, organized the first Farm Aid concert in September 1985 in Champaign, Illinois. That show drew 80,000 people and raised over $9 million. Dave Matthews joined the board in 2001, and the festival has continued virtually every year since.

What makes Farm Aid unique is that it's never just a concert — it's a platform. The lineup always features a mix of country legends, rock icons, and emerging Americana voices, but the stage is just one part of the experience.
