Born and raised in Sussex, Billy Idol first found fame as the lead singer for Generation X, one of the first punk bands to appear on the long-running BBC program Top of the Pops. After three reasonably successful albums and an appearance in the influential film D.O.A., the band decided to part ways, with Idol moving to New York in 1981 and reinventing himself as a solo act. His self-titled debut album caught attention through the lead single "White Wedding," but it was the follow-up, Rebel Yell, that became a smash hit, and established Idol as one of the biggest names in New Wave — a reputation he's maintained for the last 30 years.
